Delta School Emerge 2nd In Niger Delta Environmental Quiz Competition ~ Truth Reporters
Delta State School, Aragba Secondary School, Aragba, Orogun in Ughelli North Local Government Area on Monday, 24th June emerged 2nd in an Environmental Quiz and Essay Competition.
The competition organized by the Centre for Conflict and Gender Studies (CCGS), University of Port Harcourt, in partnership with National Coalition on Gas Flaring and Oil Spills in the Niger Delta (NACGOND) in the quiz category, took place at the Temporary Hall of CCGS, University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where twenty three schools (two of which are from Delta State), across the Niger Delta engaged in a duel for honour in a keenly contested competition.
The competition which was sequel to the training of selected students from nine Secondary Schools from Orogun at Orogun Grammar School, Orogun on Friday 2nd November, 2018 to establish Student Environmental Club by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development (Centre LSD) in partnership with National Coalition on Gas Flaring and Oil Spill in the Niger Delta (NACGOND), with support from the Dutch Embassy, Abuja.
In a related development, an elated Mr. Tony Akponovo, Chief Inspector of Education, Ughelli North, while receiving the students in his office immediately after they arrived Delta State, was full of praise to them for making not just Ughelli North, but Delta State proud, adding that “with the success of Aragba Secondary School, the doors of all schools in Ughelli North is open to Centre LSD/NACGOND to set up Environmental School Clubs”.
Meanwhile, the joyful Niger Delta Coordinator of Centre LSD, Mr. Foster Akpore, in a statement made available to news men after the sterling performance of the students of Aragba Secondary School, states that “the victory of the students is a combination of many factors, which includes the grace of God, the investment of the Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa in Education, Ughelli North Chief Inspector of Education, Mr. Tony Akponovo, the President-General of Aragba and Orogun, Chief Andrew Ndakara, the Principal of Aragba Secondary School, Mrs. Chokor Patience, Club Master, Mr. Okoro Daniel, the students: Michael Vivian, Ojumah Promise, Obah Martins, Ujiro Cyril and of course, their parents and other club members”, while thanking NACGOND for the confidence reposed in them.
He further added that the “essence of setting up the Club is to build environmental awareness in the students at an early age so as to enable them demonstrate environmental leadership for sustainable development in Africa” and that “the lesson learnt from this victory is aptly captured in the Mission Statement of Centre LSD, which is to work with forces of positive change to empower citizens to transform society”, while tasking the government to invest more in education and partner with CSOs to move the State forward, as next year's NACGOND Quiz and Essay Competition will be hosted in Delta State.
