Omo-Agege Fingered as Sponsor of Sowore’s Social Media Attacks on Governor Oborevwori — Civil Group Alleges ~ Truth Reporters

 

 

A civil society organisation, Concerned Nigerians for a Better Nigeria (CNBN), has condemned recent social media attacks launched by activist Omoyele Sowore against the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, over the enforcement of a revised dress code policy for civil servants.

 

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, the group’s convener, Olorogun Godwin Obire, PhD, alleged that Sowore’s criticisms were neither objective nor rooted in genuine concern for Deltans, but rather part of a calculated smear campaign allegedly bankrolled by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, whom he described as a desperate politician still nursing the wounds of his failed bid to govern Delta State.

 

Dr. Obire, a native of Agbarho Orohokpokpo in Ughelli North Local Government Area, accused the former Deputy Senate President of using Sowore and others as proxies in a coordinated online campaign aimed at discrediting the Oborevwori administration. 

According to him, the scheme is the latest in a series of underhanded tactics designed to destabilise a government freely and fairly elected by the people.

 

“The people of Delta State decisively rejected Senator Omo-Agege in the 2023 governorship election, yet he continues to sponsor misinformation and incite public sentiment through hired voices like Sowore,” Obire stated.

 

He described the attacks as malicious distractions intended to derail the developmental strides being recorded under Governor Oborevwori’s leadership.

 

“This is nothing but the last kicks of a failed political horse,” Obire declared. “These antics only insult the intelligence of Deltans and demean the peaceful and progressive reputation of Ughelli North. It is time for Omo-Agege and his surrogates to respect the will of the people and stop waging unnecessary wars against governance.”

 

Challenging Sowore to redirect his energy to his home state of Ondo, Dr. Obire referenced a viral video showing rain leaking into a courtroom during a sitting, describing it as a national disgrace and a more fitting target for genuine activism.

  

“Sowore’s selective outrage is telling. His silence on the decay in Ondo but sudden uproar over Delta proves he is not speaking from conviction but from sponsorship. Activism must not be for sale,” he said.

 

The group further urged reputable international organisations such as the Ford Foundation and MacArthur Foundation, both of which have previously engaged with Sowore, to reconsider their associations with him. 

Dr. Obire argued that partnering with individuals whose conduct is increasingly tied to propaganda and character assassination could undermine the credibility of such institutions.

 

“Reputation is built over time but can be tainted by affiliation with individuals who no longer uphold objectivity or decency,” he warned.

 

On the dress code policy, Dr. Obire applauded Governor Oborevwori’s directive as a timely step to restore discipline and professionalism in the civil service.

 

“Civil servants are not just employees, they are the face of government. Their appearance must reflect decency, integrity, and moral values. This policy is corrective, not oppressive, and it deserves to be emulated nationwide,” he stated.

 

He noted that Delta is not the first state to implement such measures, citing similar regulations introduced under former Governor Fashola in Lagos, Governor Ikpeazu in Abia, Governor Bago in Niger, and Governor Obaseki in Edo, none of which attracted the kind of orchestrated outrage currently directed at Delta.

 

“Where was Sowore’s voice then? Why now? Why Delta? The answer is obvious: this is a politically motivated attack with no moral foundation,” he argued.

 

Concluding, Dr. Obire reaffirmed CNBN’s full support for Governor Oborevwori’s values-driven reforms, particularly the dress code policy, which prohibits bushy beards, coloured or artificial hair, long eyelashes, fake nails, and flamboyant traditional caps among civil servants.

 

“This is not just about appearance, it is about restoring dignity and ethical responsibility in our public institutions. The Governor should be applauded for leading with values, not mocked through sponsored theatrics,” he said.
