Governor Shefiff Oborevwori: “He who serveth at the table” ~ Truth Reporters
Hon. “Tonye Timi, Ph.D., BL
The conferment of the prestigious Christian Icon Award on Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Governor of Delta State, by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) during its 50th Anniversary celebration held on Saturday, 17 October 2026, at the National Christian Centre, Abuja could not have come at a better time. This distinguished recognition, which acknowledges the Governor’s commitment to public service, integrity, ethical leadership and Christian values, is not only a moment of pride for Delta State but also a fitting tribute to a leadership philosophy anchored in compassion, humility and the understanding that public office is a sacred trust.
The Holy Scriptures declare in Proverbs 29:2 that “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice.” This timeless principle captures the essence of leadership that places the welfare of the people above personal interests, recognizes the dignity of every citizen and approaches governance as a responsibility to serve rather than an opportunity for self-aggrandizement. In this regard, the recognition of Governor Oborevwori by CAN is a commendable affirmation of the importance of Christian values in public life.
What makes the Governor’s Christian testimony particularly noteworthy is the consistency with which he maintains his religious commitments despite the demands and privileges of high political office. His continued service as a church usher, notwithstanding his position as Governor, is a humble reminder that leadership should never diminish one's willingness to serve. Rather, greater responsibility should inspire greater humility. It demonstrates that no office is too exalted for service and no position should place a leader above the values that shaped his character.
This example carries a profound lesson for political leaders, public servants and all those entrusted with positions of authority. True leadership is measured not merely by titles, power or public acclaim, but by character, empathy, integrity and the willingness to remain accountable to higher moral principles.
Another commendable feature of Governor Oborevwori’s administration is the continuation of the early-morning devotion at Government House, Asaba, an initiative established during the administration of his predecessor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa. By sustaining this practice, the Governor has demonstrated fidelity to a worthy institutional tradition and an appreciation that beneficial initiatives should transcend changes in leadership.
This continuity sends an important message: a change of government should not automatically mean the abandonment of programmes and traditions that promote the common good, strengthen institutional values and inspire responsible leadership. Where an initiative encourages reflection, prayer, gratitude and a sense of accountability before God, its preservation can serve as a meaningful example of continuity in governance.
Indeed, the experience of the United States offers useful illustrations of how personal faith can inform public leadership. President Jimmy Carter, a committed Baptist who continued teaching Sunday school after leaving office, demonstrated that religious conviction could remain a lifelong commitment to service and community. President Dwight D. Eisenhower also gave public expression to the place of faith in American civic life, including through the establishment of the National Prayer Breakfast. These examples do not suggest that faith alone guarantees good governance; rather, they illustrate the enduring relevance of humility, service, moral reflection and personal conviction in the conduct of public affairs.
For Delta State, Governor Oborevwori’s recognition by CAN is therefore both an honour and a call to greater responsibility. Awards of this nature derive their lasting significance from the values they represent and the example they inspire. They should encourage leaders to deepen their commitment to fairness, compassion, transparency, responsible stewardship and the welfare of the people.
As the State approaches another important electoral cycle in 2027, this recognition constitutes a positive public affirmation of the Christian values and leadership attributes for which the Governor has been honoured. Ultimately, the enduring measure of leadership will remain its impact on the lives of citizens, the strength of public institutions and the legacy of service it leaves behind.
May this recognition further inspire His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to sustain his commitment to God, uphold the highest standards of public service and continue working towards a peaceful, prosperous and inclusive Delta State.
