Prof. Tonukari’s Scholarship Scheme Touches Lives Across Delta ~ Truth Reporters

 

 

In a heartfelt act of philanthropy, the Honourable Commissioner for Higher Education, Delta State, Professor Nyerhovwo Tonukari, has reached out to indigent students across the State through the "Eseoghene Tonukari 2025 Scholarship Award", an initiative established in honour of his late wife.

 

The scholarship, designed to support students from low-income backgrounds regardless of their field of study, is envisioned as an annual intervention to ease the financial burden faced by young scholars in the state. Each beneficiary received ₦100,000 to support their education.

 

Reflecting on the motivation behind the programme, Prof. Tonukari said the gesture was deeply personal and anchored in the values his late wife embodied.

 

“Establishing this scholarship was my way of keeping Eseoghene’s memory alive. She was a beacon of hope and kindness, and her compassion continues to inspire me. 

"I am humbled by the response and grateful that students are already benefiting. My commitment to supporting education in Delta State remains unwavering,” he said.

 

Students from institutions across Delta North, Delta Central, and Delta South were selected as beneficiaries, with many describing the award as timely and transformative.

 

Miss Chinenye Lucy Okafor from Delta North expressed her appreciation: “This scholarship is a lifeline. I promise to make Prof. Tonukari proud.”

 

From Ethiope East, Oke Faith Idigun remarked: “It has renewed my hope and strengthened my resolve to chase my dreams despite financial challenges.”

 

Oyibo Priscilla Tega of Ughelli North praised the commissioner’s commitment: “This gesture shows his passion for education and youth empowerment. I’m truly grateful.”

 

Similarly, Favour Ogheneruona Amughono from Sapele said: “This award will go a long way in supporting my academics. I deeply appreciate this kindness.”

 

The initiative has been widely applauded by leaders across the state. Rt Hon Sunny Emeyese described it as “a commendable effort,” while Hon Faith Majemite said it stands as “a shining example of true community service.” 

Other leaders, including Chief Mike Adiotomre, Rt Hon Arthur Akpowowo, Hon Lovette Idisi, and Hon Felix Erhimedafe, also lauded the scholarship for its meaningful impact.
