Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the various wards in Oshimili South Local Government Area, Delta State, yesterday, participated in the primary election to elect councillorship candidates of the party for the forthcoming Local Government Elections.
Our correspondents, who monitored the exercise in the wards, observed that the conduct was peaceful, as most of the elected candidates were returned unopposed.
The Chairman of PDP in Oshimili South local government area, Ogbueshi Dada Okonji, led officials, including the Returning Officer (RO) from the State PDP, Mr. Rex Ubakpa, security agents and representatives of Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC), to monitor the primary election.
Beginning from Ward Nine, the team visited no fewer than 15 DSIEC wards in the local government area, where an impressive turn out of party faithful was observed and youthful candidates, both male and females elected.
At Ward 9 (DSIEC Wards 11 and 20), the duo of Mr. Ekenem Okolo and Miss Favour Chinenye polled 84 and 73 votes, respectively to be declared elected by the local government Returning Officer, Mrs. Franca Osiamgbi, while at Ward Seven (DSIEC Ward 9), Chukwudi Okonji was elected with 117 votes as declared by the Returning Officer, Mr. Okey Ijoma.
Also at Ward 10 (DSIEC Wards 12 and 14), Hon Chiedu Igwedinma and Mr. Tony Ikubor, were declared winners with 64 and 52 votes, respectively, while at Ward 4 (DSIEC Ward 5 and 18), Hon. Michael Okonji and Mr. Chiedu Onyeobi were elected with 51 and 50 votes, respectively.
Addressing party faithful during the exercise, the Chairman of PDP in the area, Ogbueshi Dada Okonji, expressed delight over the turn out and peaceful conduct of the primary election and urged the people to replicate same scenario during the local government election.
In particular, he said he was delighted that the candidates flying the party’s flag were youths, adding that the idea was to forestall the event of 2023 and prepare the youths for the 2027 elections, which the PDP was determined to win.
He also averred that non-indigenes were given recognition to reflect the metropolitan status of the local government area and congratulated the winners for emerging victorious.
One of the leaders in Ward 9, Mr. Tobechukwu Okonkwo, in his comment, lauded the peaceful exercise and enjoined those who could not make it to be patience as only one person can occupy the position at a time.
