Delta to prioritise Science Education - Ukah ~ Truth Reporters

Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Chief Patrick Ukah, has reiterated the state government commitment towards enhancing science education in the state.

Chief Ukah, who stated this in Asaba when the executive members of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), Delta State chapter, paid him a courtesy call, noted that science was critical for technological advancement of any society.

He stated that the ministry had undertaken a data base of all science teachers and science equipment in schools across the state, adding that the state government would continue to prioritise science education in the school system.

Chief Ukah disclosed that the State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, had approved the supply of science equipment to public schools particularly those without sufficient laboratory facilities.

The basic and secondary education commissioner informed the association that the Okowa administration had established Teachers' Professional Development Centre (TPDC) in the state and urged science teachers association to maximize the benefits of the centre to develop themselves.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), Delta State chapter, Dr Mrs Obiajulu Eboka, told the commissioner that the association was formed in 1957 with the aim of boosting the standard of science education in Nigeria.

She stated that STAN was also aimed at fostering mutual understanding among its members and serve as a platform where members could be well abreast of modern trend in scientific development.

While soliciting the support of the ministry for the Science Subjects Panel Workshop, she decried lack of effective participation of the state in their annual conferences just as she appealed to the commissioner to assist the association with awareness creation for its activities in the state.
