Delta Orientation Bureau Takes Flood Campaign To Riverine Communities ~ Truth Reporters

ASABA - The Delta State Orientation Bureau has taken the flood campaigns to riverine areas in the state.

The Director General, Mr Eugene Uzum Esq while officially flagging off flood campaigns On Tuesday, 20 August, 2019 at Oshimili South Council Secretariat in Asaba said Nigerians are plagued with alot of societal challenges, but that one of the burning issue is the issue of flood due to global warming, and other improper waste disposal which Oshimili South council has been fighting.

Speaking to the Council chairman and the press, he said, "Today, Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NIMET has predicted that 774 local government will go down due to flood. Another 229 will be flooded while another 476 local government will also be affected and, Delta will get it's own fair share of that flooding due to the fact that we are on a low land."

"Ahead of that, the Government of His Excellency, Sen. Dr Ifeanyi Okowa has directed Bureau for Orientation to go into the riverine areas to talk to them about what is coming, and in doing that, we are to interface with the religious, traditional institutions, youth groups, the women groups and all stakeholders. The state government is moving beyond setting up Camps for Internally Displaced Persons(IDPs) when due but before that time, the people must get the knowledge that flood is coming. So an advocacy not against the flood but to create the needed awareness that flood is coming and what needed to be done is what the State government is flagging off today with the host local government of Delta State."

Mr. Uzum disclosed that Orientation Bureau decided to come to Oshimili South local government as the number one local government in the state and as a location that flood has been ravaging, adding that the Orientation Bureau will cover the entire 25 local government areas in the state.

"Delta Government is taking the message to the grassroots, knocking at the doors of the ordinary people, telling them what is happening. The advocacy will take multiple phases - Talking to them about the effects of the incoming flood, talking to them about blockage of drains, talking to them about environmental, agricultural issues and other health hazards, he further added.

Responding, the Executive Chairman of Oshimili South council, Comrade Uche Osadebe while appreciating Mr. Uzum and his Orientation team for the sensitization embarked upon, noted that most of the farmers are not aware of the impending flood.

"We should educate them that their lives are more important than their farms."

Comrade Osadebe appealed to the Orientation boss to help sensitize his people, citing Market at Midwifery as a case study where market women blocked the drains with waste.

Highpoint of the event was the presentation of Environmental Law by the local government chairman to the Orientation boss.
