2027: Over 5,000 Bomadi/Patani Protesters Storm APC Secretariat, Demand Nicholas Mutu’s Exit After 27 Years

 

Thousands of protesters from Bomadi and Patani Local Government Areas of Delta State on Tuesday stormed the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress in Abuja, demanding the exit of longtime lawmaker, Nicholas Mutu, from the House of Representatives ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The protesters, said to be over 5,000 in number, gathered at the APC headquarters in a peaceful demonstration organised by the Bomadi/Patani Concerned Citizens Forum. 

The group called for political inclusion, leadership renewal and what they described as democratic fairness in the Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency.

According to the protesters, the constituency has been under the representation of Mutu for about 27 years, a situation they argued has limited political expansion and broader participation by other qualified citizens within the area.

The demonstration reportedly disrupted activities within and around the APC national secretariat for several hours as protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as “28 Years Is Enough,” “Expand the Political Space,” “Patani Deserves Fair Representation,” and “Allow Democracy to Breathe in Bomadi/Patani.”

Addressing journalists during the protest, stakeholders said the agitation was not borne out of personal hatred for the lawmaker but was driven by a growing demand for leadership succession, generational inclusion and rotational representation between Bomadi and Patani LGAs.

They maintained that after nearly three decades of uninterrupted representation, the constituency ought to have recorded more visible federal presence, infrastructural development and empowerment initiatives.

The protesters also expressed concern over environmental and ecological challenges affecting several communities in the constituency, including Akugbene community, home of the federal lawmaker, which they said continues to suffer severe coastal and environmental erosion despite years of legislative influence on Niger Delta-related matters.

According to the group, while political experience and seniority remain valuable, such experience should translate into measurable development and improved democratic participation for constituents.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, President of the Bomadi/Patani Concerned Citizens Forum, Comrade Chris Anthony, urged the national leadership of the APC, party stakeholders and democratic institutions to ensure that the 2027 electoral process in the constituency remains open, transparent and free from imposition.

The group warned that ignoring the growing agitation within the constituency could further deepen political dissatisfaction and weaken public confidence in democratic participation.

The protest ended peacefully, with demonstrators reaffirming their commitment to lawful civic engagement and continued advocacy for fairness, equity and political renewal in Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency.
