Delta Assembly Passes ₦1.73 Trillion Budget for 2026 ~ Truth Reporters

The Delta State House of Assembly on Monday passed the 2026 Appropriation Bill totaling One Trillion, Seven Hundred and Twenty-Nine Billion, Eight Hundred and Eighty-One Million Naira.

 

The approved budget is ₦65.6 billion higher than the ₦1.664 trillion proposal earlier presented to the House about two weeks ago by Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.

 

A breakdown of the budget shows that ₦500 billion was approved for recurrent expenditure, while ₦1.2299 trillion was earmarked for capital projects, reflecting the state government’s continued emphasis on infrastructure development and economic growth.

 

The passage of the bill followed the presentation and adoption of the report of the House Committee on Finance and Appropriations, chaired by Hon. Marylin Okowa-Daramola (Ika North-East), at a plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor (Warri South-West).

 

The motion for the third reading and final passage of the Appropriation Bill was moved by the Leader of the House, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi (Aniocha North), and seconded by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Arthur Akpowowo (Ethiope East).

 

Addressing lawmakers after the passage, Speaker Guwor described the approval of the 2026 budget as a landmark achievement consistent with the policy direction of the state government.

 

He noted that the successful passage of the budget fulfilled one of the most critical constitutional responsibilities of the House as provided under Section 121 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

 

According to him, the ₦1.73 trillion “Budget of Accelerating the MORE Agenda” underscores the shared vision and strong partnership between the legislative and executive arms of government, aimed at building a just, fair and equitable Delta State where no citizen is left behind.

 

Guwor explained that through rigorous deliberation and scrutiny, the House ensured that the 2026 budget remains people-centred and sustainable, providing a solid legislative framework for the governor to effectively deliver on his policies and programmes in the coming fiscal year.

 

He commended Governor Oborevwori for his vision for the accelerated development of the state and expressed appreciation to members of the House for their dedication, professionalism and commitment to the welfare of Deltans.

 

The Speaker said the speed and thoroughness with which the budget was considered resulted in a robust and forward-looking financial plan designed to drive development and improve the living standards of citizens in 2026.
