Light Up Ndokwa a Political Group Targeted Against Delta Deputy Governor Onyeme — Egugbo ~ Truth Reporters

 

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Delta State, Comrade Fidelis Egugbo, has said that the activities of Light Up Ndokwa, a socio-political group in Ndokwa area of Delta State, are deliberately targeted at the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, FCA, and by extension, the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

 

Egugbo, in a statement personally signed and issued on Tuesday in Asaba, described the activities of the group as “akin to those of an opposition political party.”

 

Reacting to a news story titled ‘Criticism Trails N150 Million Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme’s Scholarship Scheme in Ndokwa Nation,’ Egugbo wondered why the group chose to misrepresent a scholarship scheme that covered the entire Delta North Senatorial District as though it was limited to Ndokwa alone.

 

According to him, such misrepresentation shows that members of the group either lack proper understanding, are poorly informed, or are acting with the sole aim of misleading the public.

 

“It is unfortunate that the leadership of Light Up Ndokwa could sit and resolve that Sir Monday Onyeme is not a philanthropist but merely recycling the people’s money to buy political relevance,” Egugbo said. 

“They described his scholarship programme as political tokenism, yet failed to acknowledge that the 683 beneficiaries of the 2025 edition were drawn from across Delta North Senatorial District, with 308 of them from Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency alone.”

 

He stressed that dismissing education as incapable of addressing development challenges further exposes the group’s lack of appreciation for education as the surest path out of poverty.

 

Egugbo further explained that the Onyeme Scholarship Scheme predates Onyeme’s assumption of office as Deputy Governor, having been instituted nine years ago as an annual initiative through the Monday Onyeme Foundation. 

He noted that Onyeme’s passion for education stems from his background as a university lecturer and his understanding of students’ struggles.

 

“What is more revealing,” he continued, “is that the Secretary of Light Up Ndokwa is one Mr. Endurance McGregor Erhunmwunse, a name that hardly reflects Ndokwa origin. 

"This naturally raises questions about the true identity of those behind the group. Are they failed politicians seeking relevance ahead of the 2027 elections after losing woefully in 2023?”

 

Egugbo maintained that the group erred gravely by attacking the scholarship scheme, as beneficiaries can be found in every ward across Delta North. 

“If the group were truly on ground, they would have seen the joy of parents and students whose tuition burdens have been eased by this initiative,” he said.

 

He further cautioned that Light Up Ndokwa could face legal consequences for false accusations, since respected directors, teachers, and officials of the Ministry of Education are actively involved in the transparent selection process.

 

Egugbo clarified that the funds for the scholarship do not come solely from the Deputy Governor but also from individuals, corporate organisations, and NGOs that support education through the Onyeme Foundation.

 

“How can any reasonable person claim that funds meant for electrification projects, roads, schools, or healthcare were diverted to scholarships?” he queried. 

“For clarity, the Deputy Governor does not award contracts. His responsibilities, as clearly defined by Governor Oborevwori, are being diligently carried out to the satisfaction of the Governor and the people of Delta State.”

 

Egugbo, who also doubles as the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, urged Deltans, particularly the people of Ndokwa nation, to disregard the misleading statements of Light Up Ndokwa and continue to support the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme.
